A body in motion tells truths that words cannot. Violent Crimes: Women in Servitude is a dance piece born out of the realities of women working in nightlife and service industries, where harassment, exploitation, and silence have long been normalized. What begins as movement for survival transforms into a powerful choreography of resistance.
Through solo, duet, and group performances, the dancers embody the tension of working under the gaze of others — expected to smile, to serve, to endure. Each gesture pulls against these demands, shifting from vulnerability to defiance, from isolation to solidarity. The work explores the intersections of race, gender, and power, making visible the struggles too often hidden behind dim lights and loud music.
Set to the haunting rhythm of Kanye West’s Violent Crimes, the piece is both intimate and confrontational. It forces us to witness, but also invites us to imagine new possibilities: a culture where women’s voices and bodies are not controlled, but celebrated.
